Last winter did not exactly come in hot. Or cold, really. We had a weird start here in North Idaho with warm stretches, thin snowpack, and opening dates getting pushed back while everyone watched the forecast like it owed us money.
Schweitzer opened later than usual, and the first couple of weekends were mostly groomers with a thin layer of soft snow in the protected spots. Silver and Lookout eased into the season too. If you were around, you remember the routine. Check the webcams, check the forecast, check again, hope for the best.
Once the temperatures finally dropped, the mountain filled in fast. Mid December brought more consistent coverage, and January delivered some legitimately great days.
Early Season Riding in North Idaho
Early season around here usually means a mix of conditions. Soft snow in the morning, firmer snow by afternoon, and the occasional surprise rock reminding you it is still December. A lot of riders used older or used gear early on and saved their nicer skis and boards for when the base finally got deeper.
Edge grip matters a lot when conditions are firm. A quick tune or wax makes a big difference on those first few days when the mountain has more groomer than powder.
Getting Ready This Season
Every winter is different, but it never hurts to be prepared. If you want to ride as soon as the lifts start spinning, here are a few things we always recommend:
- Get a tune before opening day. Early season snow can be firm, and sharp edges make it more fun.
- Have your gear ready. Do not wait until the night before a storm. The shop gets busy fast.
- Consider a used setup for the early days. Save the new skis for when the base gets deeper.
Stop By the Shop
If you are getting ready for the season, stop in. We have a huge selection of new and used gear, along with tunes, waxes, and season rentals for all ages. We are always happy to help you get set up for whatever North Idaho winter brings.
Here is to another season on the mountain, even if it makes us wait for it.
