Early winter in North Idaho is unpredictable. Some years we’re shoveling driveways in November. Other years we’re waiting for the mountains to get enough snow to open.
This year has been a slower start. If you’ve been checking the Schweitzer, Silver Mountain, or Lookout Pass webcams daily, you’re not alone.
When Do Our Mountains Usually Open?
Here’s a look at typical opening timeframes for the three resorts:
Schweitzer: Late November is common. Slower snow years push it into early December.
Silver Mountain: Mid to late November in most years. Early November in big snow years.
Lookout Pass: Usually first to open in the region. Early to mid November with good snow, late November in slower seasons.
North Idaho always has variability in early winter. Warm stretches and dry spells happen. Most years, the snow arrives in force around mid December, and the mountains fill in quickly.
What We’re Seeing Right Now
We’re in one of those mild starts. A few cold nights, some snow on upper elevations, and a lot of waiting.
Not unusual for this area. Once temperatures drop and storms move in, coverage builds fast. Last season followed the same pattern. We waited, watched forecasts, and then winter showed up.
Get Ready While You Wait
Tune your gear now. The shop gets busy the day before opening. Get your edges sharpened and bases waxed before the rush.
Check boot fit. Kids grow. Adults forget how boots felt eight months ago. Make sure everything still fits properly.
Consider used gear for early season. Thin coverage is normal early on. Save your new skis for when the base builds up.
Get bindings checked. If it’s been a few seasons since your last safety check, bring them in.
We’re Ready When You Are
Our shop can handle tunes, wax, mounts, and binding checks. We also have season rentals available with brand new 2025/2026 equipment if you’re not ready to buy.
Winter always shows up. See you on the mountain.
